EDUCATED CHOICES PROGRAM

LESSON PLAN 3

ASSESSING

"FOODPRINTS"

We just learned about the connections between our food choices and the environment. We can look deeper into these connections by measuring the actual carbon footprint of our food choices.

STEP 1

PANTRY

1. Pick 4 items from your pantry, 1 of each of the following:

  • Produce item

  • Meat

  • Grains

  • Dairy

STEP 2

GREENHOUSE

GASES

2. Go through the BBC's climate change food calculator and list the following for each:

  • ____kg of greenhouse gas emissions

  • Equivalent to ____ miles driven

  • Equivalent to ____ days of heating a house

STEP 3

WATER

3. For each item you chose in the previous section, go through the Water Footprint Network's water footprint gallery and list the amount of water used per 1 pound of each item. If the specific item from the previous section is not available, choose the closest option. To calculate the amount of water used per pound, multiply the amount per kilogram by 0.45.

STEP 4

REFLECT

4. Reflect on more sustainable ways our favorite meals can be produced. In addition to carbon footprint and water consumption, brainstorm any other environmental concerns we may be able to address when examining our "foodprint." List 3!

STEP 5

EXPLORE

5. Explore 3 items provided here for alternatives to Western Diet products. How can these types of choices help address the environmental concerns covered in Steps 1-4?
