POST-PRESENTATION LESSON PLAN

LESSON PLAN 8

LABELS OF

EATING

We just learned about the connections between our food choices, our health, and the environment. Now let's see if the labels on our food choices are accurately reflecting the impacts we learned about.

STEP 1

SEARCH

1. Look at the packaging of 7-10 items (at least 2 plant-based, 2 animal-based) in your home, grocery store, or on the internet.

What descriptions are common for where the products came from or how they were produced?

Make note of any labels you see that are similar to the examples here. What do the labels certify? What types of products are they on?

STEP 2

EXPLAIN

2. Choose 3 certifications/labels that you encountered in your search. Explain what you think each these certifications cover for the following areas:

  • environmental impacts

  • effect on health

  • animal living conditions

  • worker conditions

STEP 3

EXPLORE

3. Explore what these labels mean by going directly to the websites of the 3 different certifications. Explain what each these certifications actually cover for the following areas:

  • environmental impacts

  • effect on health

  • animal living conditions

  • worker conditions

STEP 4

NOTE

4. Write a 1-2 paragraph reflection on the differences and similarities between what you originally thought the labels/certifications meant and what the actual requirements are to receive that label/certification.

STEP 5

REFLECT

5. Respond to the following:

  • Explain if the labels/certifications are representative of the item in terms of how they impact our health, the environment, and the production process.

  • How do you think the average consumer views these labels/certifications? Do you think consumer choices might be influenced by them?

  • How might your own perception of food choices be different now that you have this information compared to before?
