LESSON PLAN 2

HEALTHFUL COMMERCIAL BREAKS

We just learned about the connections between our food choices and our health. Next, we'll continue to explore these our food choices by taking a closer look at the advertisements that influence our decisions.

STEP 1

 

OBSERVE

1.1. Observe a series of advertisements from one of the following options and record your answers to the question below:

  •  Option 1: Pay attention to commercials when watching TV/streaming services

  •  Option 2: Collect advertisements from magazines, circulars, or pictures of billboards/posters

1.2. Tally how many times you see each of the following foods being promoted. (Example: A Tim Hortons commercial may advertise fast food, processed foods, sugary foods, and dairy, all at the same time.)

  • Vegetables?

  • Fruits?

  • Whole grains?

  • Fast food?

  • Soda?

  • Processed foods?

  • Sugary foods (certain cereals, candy, etc)?

  • Dairy?

STEP 2

 

SEARCH

2. Search for the following types of advertisements and commercials on YouTube, and record your observations on what types of results you get. (No need to watch the videos, just look at the results list to gather your observations.)

  • Burgers

  • Candy

  • Cereal

  • Fruit

  • Milk

  • Vegetable

STEP 3

 

WRITE

3. Keeping in mind what you discovered during Step 1-2, read this Heart and Stroke Canada article about food advertisements and teen health. Write down 3 points you find interesting. Do the claims in this article match your observations from the previous steps?

STEP 4

 

REFLECT

4. Write a 2-paragraph reflection on how the difference in frequency for the types of foods that are advertised might influence the foods we choose to consume. Include how these advertisements are also influencing our health and what foods we see as normal.
