In the Press: U.S. Rep Oye Owolewa Joins ECP Collaboration

From the Desk of U.S. Representative Oye Owolewa, April 18, 2023

On Tuesday, April 18th at 1pm EST, D.C.'s U.S. Representative Oye Owolewa will be joining Martha's Table and the Educated Choices Program for their "Growing Community Roots" event. This event, starting at 1pm EST, is a community garden educational program that will showcase the importance of urban agriculture. Here, Rep Oye plans to highlight his own family history in farming to show the value of this type of initiative in D.C. This collaboration is a critical part of Rep Oye's Public Health and Safety Initiative where community gardens and other green local activities remain prominent fixtures of D.C. Community gardens have been shown to reduce our carbon footprint in our battle against climate change, contribute to the beautification of our neighborhoods and fill young people with positive experiences.

"I'd like to thank Martha's Table and Educated Choices Program for bringing this partnership to D.C." says Rep Oye. "My office is committed to this project because of its impact on our community. As a grandchild of an African farming family, I see 'Growing Community Roots' as a personal full circle. I recall my dad telling me about how empowered he was when he ate food that he grew, the satisfaction he had when he realized the full garden he helped cultivate and ultimate pride he gained once his community enjoyed seeing the beauty of his garden. As today's Representative of Washington, D.C., I want to replicate that experience in our nation's capital. I'm expecting this venture to have a similar impact on those living here in D.C., and I expect this collaboration to be the beginning of a very fruitful partnership."
